What happens when a self taught food and history enthusiast meets with a garden sanctuary growing spices? I suppose the title has given it all away and sure - it’s most obvious – cooking demos!

Naz and I met at the recent cultural heritage trails workshop which was run by Penang Heritage Trust. And as a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, I had the good fortune of meeting Nazlina Hussin, a rather remarkable woman who has taught herself the art of web mastery, site hosting and development and how to be financially independent – all from her website she has tirelessly nurtured in cyberspace. Needless to say, cooking classes at the gardens was a natural progression and with our combined energy – a real force to reckon with, I say!

Shiny, happy Nazlina

Shiny, happy Nazlina

The difference with our cooking demos are that Nazlina actually delves in to secrets kept from generations and also the cultural significance of the utensils and ingredients used. It’s more than just watching how beautiful dishes are assembled but rather an exploration into the many layers that have created a culture through our well loved cuisine.

Naz’s personal touch and rapport with people will immediately make people feel at ease and fall in love with cooking so many women perceive as the most dreaded chore worldwide.

Our cooking classes began in late June and we have had the support true fans of Tropical Spice Garden including Margaret Gaspar from Holiday Tours and Kim Manta-Khaira who have left us floored with their wonderful and encouraging comments from first hand experience.

The location over looking the bay views with Naz’s warmth exuding from her tales and food has ensured a memorable visit for each of our participants thus far.

Margaret’s visiting journalist guest from Australia, Samille Mitchell, commented that out of the 3 packed days in Penang, the most memorable experience was at Tropical Spice Garden and the cooking demo! What a compliment!
